What is Your Foot Type?

Optimize your performance and avoid injury by knowing your foot type.

Knowing your foot type is the first step on choosing running shoes. By using the proper running shoes depends on your foot type, not only giving you comfort during running, but also increasing your performance and avoiding injury. Foot type is related to the way you move, your performance and balance, and the risk of overuse injury.

Discussing about foot type will take us to the discussion about the arch or the angle of your foot’s curve. Arch supports the foot during movement and also supporting body weight.

Generally, there are three human foot type, as seen as below pictures.

From these three types of foot arches, the difference lays on the middle and transverse side of the foot. Those arches difference are affected by several things such as bones, ligaments, and muscles.

1. Normal Arch

This kind of arch has a normal curve on the mid foot so the foot will have enough width. Runner with this kind of arch tends to run ergonomically and efficiently.

2. Low Arch or Flat Arch

This type is also called flat foot. During running or standing, this kind of foot type will leave trail almost on the whole surface of the foot, it is also marked by relatively equal width between mid foot and fore foot. The leg tends to bend inside and overpronate during running.

3. High Arch

This type is also called C-shaped foot. This kind of arch is susceptible on falling because its curve is very deep and it makes the connection between fore foot and mid foot unstable. The mid foot part will be very narrow. The weight load during running on this condition will be focused on the middle and back part of the foot.
